The Chinese government executed a Japanese national on drug smuggling charges. The first case since 1972, they write -- but the case is even more. Over half a century, there has been no execution of Japanese nationals overseas. This situation is quite -- not only shocking but poses dangerous threats on anyone in China on business or on trip.
On the other hand, the execution was put off just by one day. They say, it was because it was right after the family visited Mr. Akano, and also that it was a holiday in China. The visit of his family is exceptional in cases like this. What of an extended day of a person?
There were thousands of executions carried out in China last year. The figure is not accurate since the Chinese government does not release the official reports on their executions. The executions are carried out by lethal injections. Out of concerns not to damage the organs, they say. They sell internal organs of the prisoners. They execute at the place where the crime scene was, so-called "death vans" visit and execute the sentences. This is because, they insist, that the death penalties should be, for a "warning" to public as well as a revenge.
The way Hatoyama administration handle the case, was truly unsensational. It started out playing down the announcement from the Chinese government, simply by not bringing up the subject. Then it issued some harmless comments, meant for domestic audiences first then to Chinese government. The message they have sent was not even an "accusation" but was a "concern" of the reactions. They finished the case with saying they are incapable of dealing with the Chinese government.
I can not think of anything worse than this in terms of the reaction of the Japanese administration. First of all, they should have shown their concerns of the Japanese nationals for coming danger, by not hiding the fact but making a case out of it. They say, the administration did not request to stop the execution. The messages of the ministers did not warn the Chinese government but simply encouraged them. The Chinese government announced yet another three executions in coming days right after they received the message of their "concerns".
If they do not deal with China now, they will never be able to. That would prompt the Japanese government to go to them out of necessity not being able to deal with the Chinese government. The China-prone policies will endanger the status quo of Taiwan. It does not necessarily mean conflicts of any sorts. They will only mean to shut the eyes off from any democratic movements in China. Several thousands of executions is not a hopeful sign, or however they describe it, that "the Chinese government will get better with the increase of its GDP". There are eight Japanese nationals to be tried still. The Foreign Minister reportedly refrained from speaking to the Chinese ambassador again for the execution.
