President Obama made a speech today about the oil spill caused by a deadly explosion on April 20th in the gulf. In the speech, he reassured that everything possible is done to stop the spill and the Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and the best scientists and engineers are tackling on the task. He said, the people affected by the disaster will be compensated, by BP. He referred to create an escrow account, which the Senate democrats sent a letter to BP for the amount of 20 billion dollars. He referred to the people what damage the oil spill had caused on their business, such as fishing and tourism, and said it is not just about the money they have lost, they might face losing their businesses altogether. He promised their business will be restored.
He said he will find out what has caused the explosion and set up a team to investigate on BP's operations, and named federal prosecutor Michael Bromwich for the task. It has been reported that the company had ignored the warning from the senior member of the company for safety. He also referred to the responsibility on the federal level in regulating oil drilling. He said Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar was in charge since the beginning of his term to improve the department. He said new sets of measure is to be taken and oil drilling will be suspended until it would be sure that it is absolutely safe to do so.
He referred to the US dependence on oil. He said that the US consumes 20% of all fossil resources in the world whereas only 2% is within US. He mentioned moving on to renewable energy generation using wind, solar power, and said will implement energy saving measures such as insulation of windows, solar panels, and more efficient vehicles. He urged oil companies to invest more in R&D section, which he claims spend less for newer technologies. In the first part of the speech, he mentioned the men and women in uniform fighting against terrorism.
The tone was sober and I would think he was to reassure the people that his administration is doing the right jobs. He did not mention about BP up front yet was firm in saying that the company must be clear about what happened and must compensate for the loss. He previously mentioned that this is not to make UK people their enemies and it did sound like it. He was more positive on creating jobs in the renewable energy section.
