Some exchanges of harsh words were reportedly passed between the French President Sarkozy and the president of European commission Barrosso in regards to Roma, known as Gipsie. The President's speech at a EU committee sounded serious, just as serious as those remarks on newspaper articles accusing him. He talks much more sober and tactful than he did in the United States making remarks on the political reforms in the United States.
The French government removed 51 illegal Roma camps since July and deported 1230 Romani people. The Romani people reportedly attacked the village of Saint-Aignan after the police shot a casino-robbery suspect to death. President Sarkozy stated their camps are "sources of illegal trafficking, of profoundly shocking living standards, of exploitation of children for begging, of prostitution and crime". The polls support his arguments.
The president Barroso is criticizing the move as racial that being Romani and Romani belonging to the camps is not the enough reason for deportation. While there has been no remarks from the Romani people nor association that declare they would not attack a village nor commit any crimes, the critics call the deportation a disgrace. The removal of camps may not be about deportation of Romani and to reject the claim that it is racial, there must be cases of Romani not belonging to the camps are spared from such cases.
Security should have the priority. It is not about the educated people talking about freedom of religion. It is about organized crimes and people under the tyranny of local mobsters. There must be the explicit laws that limit and protect their activities. On the other hand, the deportation will not secure the social status nor living standards of Romani people. Moreover, this move might encourage other nations to follow the suit.
The EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding threaten to launch a legal procedure against Frence for deportation.
