President Obama in his weekly address calls for support for the US's taking initiatives in the renewable energy sector, such as solar cell panels and lithium batteries manufacturing. Currently, the UK has the world largest wind power facilities and Japan's Sharp developed the most efficient solar panels. The President referred to the world's largest solar panel plants in Mojave desert in California powering 140,000 homes, which would create jobs now and in the future.
Listening to his speech, I was wondering whether he is declaring war against those solar panel and lithium battery manufacturers, of which ones of the best are the Japanese companies. He did not mention Japan for the competitors of the US manufacturers, however, and the emphasis was on how to find a way to fund the US companies which should develop the state of art technologies. He said, this is the investment we should look into. I can not agree more, for that.
In a certain way, it is far better than making factories in China and letting the technological patents freely flowing to all. The US does have the capabilities to develop the most efficient and innovative technologies to produce electricity thus reducing its reliance of foreign oil, if not creating the most cost effective products. Does he mean to create research facilities or building factories for the technology?
The electronics and semiconductor business are now solely concentrated in East Asian region. I have never encountered any products here in the States that have electronics parts to it which are not made in the region. Any simple products starting from toasters, microwave ovens, cameras, TV's, etc are not made in the States nor in any other parts of the world but East Asia. Solar panel is made up with semiconductor films. In 2009, of 16 fabs started construction in the world. There are only Saratoga Country, NY fab that are started construction in the States. 15 fabs were closed in the States last year.
However the plans are, the positive moves would be a good news for the renewable energy sector and the semiconductor industries. The renewable energy will reduce the emission of the United States' green house effect gases that consists of around 20% of the world produces. As the President said, the investments in the renewable energy sector makes a lot of sense.
