At the Facebook headquarter, the President had a town hall meeting this afternoon. It was during the work hours and I must say I would feel more comfortable listening to the discussion at home rather than in the office.
The President mostly talked about the budget, and his plan to cut the four trillion dollars of spending within next ten or twelve years. He did say 'or', making it sound like he was ready to go ahead with the plan earlier. He laid out the plan to cut the budget by two trillion dollars, referring to the need to lower the cost of healthcare and military budgets.
Then the President proceeded to mention the plan for ending the tax cuts for the riches. Ending the tax cuts will mean one trillion of dollars. The Facebook mogul was there at the hall and he did say that out loud there. Unfortunately, I did not look at his face because I was programming, or rather commenting on my programs.
The President then answered the questions from the viewers across the nation. One of the questions was about how to lower the healthcare costs. He said, 20% of the recipients spend 80% of the welfare budgets and there are areas that needs to be improved to make the system more sense and efficient. He referred to the plan to improve the efficiency of the hospital care such as not doing the same test again. He said, the status quo is not sustainable to cope with the increase of the cost of social security will get the economy into trouble.
The President was referring to the Race to Top program to cut the red tapes that he claimed improved the school systems in the nation. The program awards incentives to schools that show good results. He said, even if not every school is awarded the money, schools went ahead with improvements on their curricula and managements.
As for the energy problem, the President talked about ARPA-E which is much like DARPA but is for clean energy. The President was upbeat about the prospect of electric cars and hes aid over a million electric vehicle will be running across the town and for the government. He said, the US companies now are producing only a tiny fraction of the lithium batteries of the electric cars now and wants to reverse the trend. He boasted that the three car manufacturers survived the recession and did so with the governmental aids. He said, the companies are hiring the US workers again.
The president was blunt in saying that he has to convince the investors that he is to cut the budget. In that context, he referred to Republicans' budget and said their budget is 'radical', the familiar term the conservatives use frequently when they talk about reforms. He accused them for aiming at the weak when they talk about the budget cuts.
The President declared that he is to reform the immigration system which is not functioning. He said, the problem of the illegal status of many immigrants must be addressed. He referred to the need to tighten the border security as well and said the reform should not be in any way to encourage smuggling. In all, his speech was in the election mode already. He referred to the female Supreme Court judges, Sotomayor and Kagan he nominated.
