The French President Francois Hollande ended his surprise trip to Afghanistan, where he reaffirmed the withdrawal of the French combat troops within the year 2012. 

The newly elected President said the French troops involvement in Afghanistan will be in a more civil or economic role.  He said to the country's troops "you'll be home by Christmas".
The election in Egypt resulted in a run-off between the Muslim brother endorsed candidate Mohammed Morsi and the military endorsed candidate Ahmed Shafiq.
