Democracy in Tunisia

The Prime Minister of Tunisia Hamadi Jebali resigned.  The nation which toppled the long reign of Ben Ali by popular uprising now is suffering from exactly the political chaos.  Just weeks ago, the opposition leader of the secular party was murdered.

Democracy is based upon equality.  Equality is based upon democracy.  What happens if, the political chaos brings military dictatorship once again?  Is it a death of democracy?  Would the people choose the rule of the military forces again instead of political chaos?

The election was supposed to give the voters the confidence that the regime change happens peacefully if not now then in the future.  What is driving people to despair to the point to take up arms?  Here we need to assure people that democracy works and works in the way that people can have hopes.

The military actions on the side of Western nations did not contribute in any ways in building up trust among people.  The US murders of civilians in Pakistan and elsewhere.  The French intervention in Mali.  The Israel air raids in Gaza.  The military attacks only nurture hostility and fueling militants by giving them the best possible reasons to its people to take up arms.

Air bombing civilians by drones and calling it the wars against terrorism apparently created friends in the region.  The wars without clear objectives seem to be ending soon after more than 11 years.  Some nations declared or already have withdrawn forces from Afghanistan.  The US forces will be withdraw 34,000 troops this year.

Let us hope the Western nations will not resort to forces once again nor going back in time sending aids to dictators when the voices of people are louder enough to topple the ancient regime.  Let us hope the democratic process in the region will succeed with helps not provocations from the international society.
