Mass election, SCOTUS, Africa, and Australia


- Dems took back Massachusetts.  Rep. Ed Markey won the Massachusetts senatorial race on Tuesday.  While his victory is somewhat predictable in the heavily Democratic state, the election win relieved many Democratic voters letting Republican Scott Brown win the race in 2010.  Rep. Markey has been in the House for more than 36 years.  There will be a primary and an election for his now vacant House seat.

- President Obama is visiting Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania.  There are criticisms on its cost being over $100 million tax money without clear objectives.  The President is not expected to meet with former South African President Nelson Mandela who are in critical condition.

- Australian Prime Minister Gillard is stepping down.  Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is to lead the labor party.  The vote took place before its general election in September.  Former Prime Minister Rudd is known to has taken pro-China policies, and is fluent in Chinese.

- The Supreme court on Tuesday in 5-4 decision ruled against the article 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires preclearance before the state would pose any restrictions on voting rights.  Higher percentage of African American voters than any other ethnic groups voted for 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections. 

- SCOTUS strikes down DOMA on Wednesday.
