The article put up front that the US and Russia have some conflicts of interests. Evidently, if both backed off, the Syrian tragedy would even exist for sure. The President probably does not have the motive to deny military actions being 'real leverage', which derail any peace talks in the world.
He warns the US support to Islamist rebels, which do not have unified voice, include extremists such as Al-Nusra which have repeatedly sending out video clips worldwide showing merciless murder of its citizens, including public executions. They themselves are skeptical about the US military supports for good reasons. How should they be supporting Israel just this time?
There are positive reactions to his writing, with some cautious remarks on the human rights issues in Russia. While Obama's comments on "time-limited, targeted air strikes just for punishment" are criticized as ill-thought-of, arrogant and the real threat to world peace that are not backed with either knowledge on this issue nor human rights concerns, many seem to agree with: apparent discrepancy does not deter one from acting on behalf of larger causes, which are based upon principles that are not the same with the one that the discrepancy is based upon.
