North Korea launched an ICBM. The reactions about the ICBM launch by North Korea vary and they reflect the policies in coping with this crisis.
The overall theme has been how could such an impoverished Stalinist nation of North Korea be making an ICBM that reaches the US mainland. Situated right in the midst of the technological hub, the rapid advancement of the technology in North Korea may not be surprising after all. The ICBM reached some 3700 km up in the air and landed inside the EEZ of Japan.
Now that the small nation of some 25 million under ridiculous dictatorship launched an ICBM and claims that would reach anywhere in the States, apparently there seems no other way for other nations than taking measures against such moves. This comes right after the calls from the South Korea and its newly elected leader suggesting some dialog with the famed treacherous regime that has never kept its promises of dropping the weapons development programs.
The threat of attacking the United States by an ICBM is not self-defense nor that it claims that be. The provocation is their reaction of answering the threat of sanctions of closing the Chinese banks that have their accounts. The brutal dictatorship that has kept its power by fear of imprisonment and executions of its citizens including his family members, the high officials and their family members, the citizens is revolting against the pressure from the international community.
The international community indeed overall has been supporting sanctions. The talk between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Trump was symbolic showing such consorted effort. Facing an election this fall, the cooperation is essential. What then of Russia? How is it that after the election of South Korean center-left President of Moon, after Russia resumed shipment from North Korea, Russia has not even recognized this crisis. Russian officials has claimed the missile (but not a satellite) is not an ICBM but IRBM and effectively blocked any UNSC resolutions.
The dysfunctional UN and UNSC is, say, sad, even as some members of the conservatives may say otherwise. The UN denouncement is not the same thing as any combination of the US accusations of the nuclear development program and the EU accusations of the dire human rights abuses. The unified voice is a key in getting our voices heard by the Kim Jong-un regime which boasts of its military-first policies.
However political move that may be, Russia should act as as a responsible stakeholder, not a bystander watching the efforts on pressuring the regime as a chance of political meddling.
