During the chaotic voting process in Catalonia's independence referendum hundreds were reportedly injured. The oppression of the Madrid government is termed as #vergüenza. The heavy handed Spanish central government is termed atavistic, something that they inherited from their Franco era.
The size of the economy of Catalonia exceeds that of Portugal and is largely independent in terms of having its own police, schools, and government.
