Democracy does have its aspect of burdening an individual with responsibilities. By claiming 'every vote counts', the state can enforce rules. The rules, should go in accordance with the belief of the individual, if the system works as democracy. So then, what is the discrepancy of claiming the duty against your belief should be good for the society, which you do not believe in?
'The inner voice' simulating the state placing such laws on individual, is not democratic. 'What the people say' ruling your life is not democracy. It is only the oppressive government that enforces it. Most likely, it somewhat aids the ruling class. It certainly is not democracy nor should be the belief of the individual. It is called harassment. Every one of us have the goals of life which is quite the opposite of what the people wants. Or what the very powerful oppressive someone wants. In many cases, it is not even what the people want -- it simply is something that pleases that dictatorial someone from the ruling class.
Simply put, what the people say is not the belief of an individual nor is not democratic if forced upon an individual. The religious freedom is our right. My inner self does not ask questions even if some dictator believes it is some common questions. Let alone my belief and activities should be deterred by such questions. That is simply oppression by the dictatorial someone in power. Power, fame, name, and influence, do not define a person. We have our own belief of life.
You should avoid such groups or friends, if they let you down.
