Trading Trust: Congress and the Stock Ban Showdown

On July 30, 2025, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee made a historic move by passing a bill that bans elected officials, including members of Congress, the President, and their immediate families, from investing in individual stocks, commodities, futures, cryptocurrencies, and corporate bonds. Touted as a response to long-standing concerns over insider trading and conflicts of interest, the bill sparked controversy for its original name, the PELOSI Act, even though all Republican committee members voted against it. Passed narrowly by an 8–7 margin, the legislation includes divestment timelines: 90 days for newly elected officials and the end of term for current officeholders. Though rebranded under bipartisan sponsorship, the bill’s political implications continue to stir debate as it heads to the Senate floor.
